Sarah Selby wins 2023 Lumen Prize for Between the Lines

Artist Sarah Selby has won the 2023 Lumen Prize for Art & Technology in the 3D/Interactive category for Between the Lines.

Between the Lines is a creative intervention that aims to infiltrate the bureaucratic and increasingly AI-moderated systems of the UK border regime by embedding the stories of the individuals impacted back into the systems that govern them. Individuals subjected to the UK border regime record their testimonies and experiences, which are then converted into binary data and encoded into synthetic DNA. The synthetic DNA is mixed with writing ink and injected into pens, which are then distributed to the frontline administrative workers. Read more about Between the Lines.

Co-commissioned by Science Gallery London, Between the Lines is currently on display at Science Gallery London as part of our current season, AI: Who’s Looking After Me? On Saturday 13 January 2024, Sarah will be filling pens in-person at the Gallery, offering visitors the chance to meet the artist and learn more about the project.

The Lumen Prize celebrates the best art created with technology through a global competition. Founded in 2012 by UK-based digital arts champion Lumen Art Projects, prizes were awarded in eleven categories this year, including new categories Metaversal Generative Art Award and Crypto Art Awards.
