Science Gallery London is one!

From making lava in Guy’s Courtyard, to keeping skin cells alive in an incubator powered by bees, it’s been a busy first year at Science Gallery London!

Our new home at King's College London officially opened on 25 September 2018, marking the end of a long process to transform part of Guy's Campus into a new free space where science and art collide.

Here some of the Science Gallery London team share their favourite moments from our first year.

"My best moment has to be organising, planning and attending Science Gallery London’s first wedding. The couple had met on their dentistry course at King’s College London and both love science – it was meant to be!"

Tim, Associate Director (Operations)

"During the first week of opening, quite by chance I bumped into the art student daughter of one of my oldest friends visiting the Gallery along with her student doctor boyfriend. Both of them had loved the HOOKED exhibition, and were constantly interrupting each other to tell me which artworks they had enjoyed most, and pressing me, with genuine excitement, about what was coming next. This was the first time I really knew that we were hitting the spot for our priority young audiences!"

Esther, Community Engagement Manager

"My highlight of the year? Impossible! I guess my top 3 would be:

  • Co-creating a jam-packed international Science Gallery Youth Symposium with representatives from Galleries in 6 countries, in which Young Leader Mandeep experimented with a futuristic live rap with 50 young people

  • Building cross-cultural connections as our talented Mediators delivered incredibly welcoming tours to the Baytree Centre and Latin American Youth forum.

  • A short film by Young Leader, Bella, being screened at the BFI, featuring her fellow Young Leaders.

I feel incredibly lucky to be in a position where I get to dedicate my time to 15-25 year olds in the local community, working with all the amazing young people, the Young Leaders and local organisations."

Emma, Marketing and Communications Manager

"I remember sitting in our Café and having a delicious breakfast with colleagues the day after our launch party, feeling absolutely exhausted from the event but elated about what we had achieved in opening the Gallery and incredibly excited for the future!"

Benti, Security Officer

"At Science Gallery London, I witness many joyous occasions. As it's in the heart of London, it is where people of different backgrounds, expectations and needs come together. As a Security Officer I am happy seeing that the Gallery is showing improvement, developing its experience on a daily basis.

"I am absolutely thrilled that I am part of King's College London, making it safe and secure around the clock."

Tarkan, Hospitality and Events Manager

"In one of our summer courtyard events we hosted 400 guests! It was an awesome feeling seeing all our guests enjoying their company while sipping modern cocktails in our historic Guy’s Courtyard…"

Katie, Communications Officer

"Over the past year I’ve loved seeing visitors have a great time at Friday Lates, from dancing with The Yonis to doing cosmic origami!"

Sarah, Sales and Events Executive

"Having delivered over 200 events in our first year the most memorable has to be when we transformed the auditorium style lecture theatre into a chocolate-making workshop for 100 guests; it proved just how versatile our spaces can be!’"
