What makes a good blipp? Tips for #EyeHack hackathon

Ready to explore human and computer vision? Our augmented reality hackathon, #EyeHack, (happening 10am-5pm on Saturday 19 November), is fast approaching and to help you prepare to hack, Chantal Pinkham, Cultural Partnerships Manager at the world’s leading AR platform and #EyeHack partner Blippar answers FAQs such as ‘what is a blipp anyway?’ and ‘how do I build one?’

First timers do not worry! On the day we will teach you all that is needed to navigate our simple and easy to use D.I.Y AR platform Blippbuilder. For the dedicated tech wizards we have a more complex software, Blippbuilder Script, which is specifically designed for Java script coders who can handle diving even deeper into the AR universe.

 

So what makes a good blipp (Augmented Reality experience)?

 

1.  Get to know your 'marker'

Your ‘marker’ is the image that will trigger the blipp that you are going to build. This is already set as part of the #EyeHack brief,  - the challenge is to build a blipp that is triggered by the eye graphic on Science Gallery London’s hoardings. The winning group’s blipp will go live and be triggered by the eye in this prime London Bridge site. Good blipps use the shape and design of the marker image to launch into a seamless digital experience. For example, you could overlay the blue iris with a gently spinning image of the earth and use this as a starting point for telling the audience a tale of shifts in cultural perception…

2.  Purpose

Think about what you want your blipp to achieve. How can your blip address the themes that Science Gallery London have picked (colour and vision, non-human vision and seeing the unseen)? Build with your target audience in mind - how can we get London Bridge locals, workers, students and tourists to interact with science and art in a fun and surprising way? Think about what you want your audiences to take away from the experience.

 

3. Content

Next, collate and create content for your blipp. Think about how you can use striking images, videos, animations, multimedia etc as part of your blipp. Remember – storytelling is key! Get creative with this, write a poem, shoot your own mobile movie, or experiment with using elements such as colour, shape and sound to tell your #EyeHack story. 4. Build It

If you’re super keen to learn how to build you can take a sneak peek at some of our online tutorials. Full guidance and support will be given on the day so don’t worry if you can’t get around to watching them all.

One day isn’t a lot of time, so no time to waste, get mind-mapping, thinking and blipping! We look forward to seeing you there. Make sure you come prepared with phone chargers, laptops and all the creativity you can muster.
