Talking Statues

If statues could talk, what stories would they tell? Using drama, humour and location technology, Talking Statues breathes new life into the statues that surround us. For the MOUTHY season a number of statues on Guy’s campus gained a voice.

Asclepius, the Greek god of medicine.

A boat by artist Daniel Silver, inspired by the remains of a Roman boat that lies underneath the foundations of the new Cancer Centre on the Guy’s Campus.

John Keats, a former medical student at Guy’s Hospital.

The statue of Asclepius is voiced by Lancashire comedian Dave Spikey, who began his career as a biomedical scientist before turning his talents to comedy and the boat is voiced by yachtswoman Dame Ellen MacArthur, who founded the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust to help young people recovering from cancer or leukaemia to regain their confidence through sailing.

As part of this project, the statue of John Keats was given the gift of speech via a public writing competition. The Keats monologue was written by Tom Jordan, the winner of our creative writing competition, and is voiced by actor Carl Stone.
