Gutted at The Old Operating Theatre

  • Science Gallery London Great Maze Pond London, England, SE1 United Kingdom (map)

Gutted, a live script by Laura Wilson and Alan Whiting, uncovering the deep ties between our gut and the world - was live at one of Europe’s oldest operating theatres.

Gutted is a script by artist Laura Wilson with screenwriter Alan Whiting, exploring connections between the digestive faculties of our bodies and the landscapes and ecosystems around us. Encouraging us to consider how we think and feel through our stomachs, this live performance at the Old Operating Theatre, situated the work in one of the oldest surviving operating theatres in Europe, a site resonating with Wilson's research for Gutted around surgical history, health and medicine.

Gutted by Laura Wilson was commissioned by Site Gallery in 2022, supported by the Jerwood New Work Fund and The Elephant Trust. Presented in partnership with East Gallery, Norwich University of the Arts.

The Gutted performance was made possible with the support of Science Gallery at King’s College London and Team London Bridge. Two performances took place on the 3rd of April, at 6.30pm and 7.30pm. Tickets were free.

About The Old Operating Theatre & Herb Garret

Located in the attic of an 18th-century church, the Old Operating Theatre Museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of medicine and surgery, featuring a timber-framed Herb Garret once used for drying medicinal plants and Europe’s oldest surviving surgical theatre for women, where operations took place before anaesthetics and antiseptics.
